Canyons
Nature's work of art
In the area of the Durmitor National Park and in its immediate vicinity, there are several exceptional natural beauties: canyons!
The force of the water of small rivers has carved its way through the mountain range over millennia. This small space is bordered by deep, impassable canyons, among the deepest or narrowest on the planet.
Blue-green mountain rivers flow through these canyons, the water so clear and pure that you can drink it.
Tara Canyon
Tara canyon implies one of the most fascinating scenes in Europe. This turquoise blue stripe of crystal clean water cuts the northern
edge of the Durmitor National Park, and forms 1300 m deep canyon - a miracle of nature that is in itself a sufficient investigation
for all entortment and nature lovers.
The Tara River is also called "tears of Europe", because the water is clean and drinkable
along its entire flow. Tara canyon is the longest canyon in Europe, and on the world level only comes behind the Great Canyon.
The last 40 km of its stream, Tara river is the fastest and abounds in rapids. For this reason, rafting and kayaking activities are
mostly organized here, as it makes the entire experience very exciting.
Another place to visit: an elegant bridge that crosses
the canyon in Đurđevića Tara village, at a height of 172 m above the river.
Nevidio Canyon
The Nevidio canyon is 3.8 kilometers long and is entered into 935, and out of 810 meters above sea level. For a less than four
kilometers, the height difference is 125 meters, which indicates that the canyon is quite steep. In some parts, there is an
extremely narrow about 1 meter, although in one shorter part between the rock distance is only 25 centimeters. His biggest width
is five meters. Above the water, vertical, stone cliffs, which are larger they go to the height of up to 450 meters. Therefore,
many parts of the canyon in eternal shade, because sun rays cannot reach his bottom.
Due to its specific characteristics
and inaccessibility, the canyon of Nevidio wore the "title" of the only unexplored and neighborn canyon in Europe until 1965. At
21. century this canyon became extremely popular for the increasingly attractive highly adrenaline recreation - canyoning.
Sušica Canyon
Sušica Canyon is 14 km long. Sušica springs about 1300 meters above sea level and flows into Tara at 512 m. The canyon is located within the Durmitor National Park and is therefore protected by many regulations that have contributed to the preservation of its beauty. Sušica river is, as her name means, volatile and one part of his stream flows underground. Sušica several times loses in the underworld and recovered, before its mouth in Tara. Old people say that Susica used to have a constant course, but it became a hayer after a huge flood, which created the abyss. At the bottom of the canyon, there is a unique phenomenon - an unreal lake that is also of a periodic character. In the spring, when melting from the surrounding mountains, the lake is filled with water and later dries and turns into incredibly beautiful valley, meadow with the finest grass. The indescribable experience is observing "lakes" from above, with the cliff of the canyon.
Piva Canyon
The Piva river was made an unusual pretty canyon between the high mountains, 33 km long, high up to 1200 meters. Piva canyon was
considered one of the most lively and most attractive canyons in the Balkans. This canyon is characteristic of that people have
changed the art of nature. A huge artificial lake were created by building a hydroelectric power plant (1976) and Martinje dam.
Martinje dam is 220 meters high and is one of the highest dams in Europe. The view of the dam is magnificent and it seems
unreal and imposing. By immersion of the part of the canyon, Plužine, small town, is sunken. This small town was completely rebuilt
on a higher level, so today it is located on the coast of the Lake Piva. He is considered the youngest city on the Balkan Peninsula.
Similarly happened with the monastery Piva, which was transferred, stone by stone, to a higher location.
Komarnica Canyon
Komarnica rises in field Komanska, flows through a very narrow gorge, between villages Pošćenje and Duži, after which it joins the
Bukovica river. Komarnica continues to flow between Vojnik and Treskavac mountains in an almost uninhabited area and enters the Piva
basin, where it turns north, joins the Piva spring and enters the deep Piva canyon. Until a certain extension under the village of
Donja Rudinica, the Komarnica canyon through Piva is so deep, steep and narrow, especially between Dragaljevo and Duba and between
Bezuj and Bukovac, that the villagers of those villages call each other and talk from hill to hill with strong echoes that bounce
off each other. from steep beams in a canyon about 700 meters deep.
At the end of the river valley, outside the borders of
Piva, Komarnica enters among the rocks and slowly becomes "untouchable". This is where Nevidio Canyon begins.
